Drafting to discover: how and why the pages that don’t go in the book matter the most.

The process of drafting to discover is one of the single most important skills you need to be successful (and stay sane!) as a fiction writer. In this course, you’ll learn how to develop habits that enable you to rejoice in all the pages you write that don’t end up in your book.

The course will include sample writing exercises to help you lean in to this process (conducted during the class), plus a workbook with further exercises for you to continue the work on your own.

In this course, you’ll learn:

Why the function of prewriting, free writing, and drafting for fiction differ from any other category of writing, and what that means for your process of creation

How to reframe the emotional blocks that come with killing your darlings (even when those darlings are whole scenes, chapters, or even the majority of your manuscript)

Practical, actionable writing habits you can implement right away that will help you learn to rejoice in all the pages you write that don’t end up in your book.

Sample writing exercises to help you lean into this process (conducted during the class), plus a workbook with further exercises for you to continue the work on your own.
